AI Map Generator v3: Smarter Placement, Water and Styles
The third version of the RPGJS Studio AI map generator places elements more reliably, generates water with terrain morphology, lets you pick a style, and leaves alpha.
AI Map Generator v3: Smarter Placement, Water and Styles
The AI map generator in RPGJS Studio reaches its third version. This release focuses on what makes a map feel designed rather than random: where things are placed, the shape of the ground, and the look of the whole map. It also marks the end of the alpha.
From an Image to a Designed World
A quick look back at how the generator evolved:
- v1 produced a single image. Nice to look at, impossible to edit.
- v2 produced real, editable map content: terrain tiles and movable decor, with the option to generate tilesets and terrains from nothing. But there was no way to choose a style, and element placement did not always follow the layout you asked for.
- v3 keeps everything editable, fixes placement, and adds styles and water, so the first draft is much closer to a map you would have built by hand.
Better Element Placement
The biggest change is how the AI arranges the world. In v2, trees, rocks, buildings and props could end up in unexpected places, and the layout described in the prompt was not always respected. v3 places elements much more reliably:
- Elements are grouped coherently: forests have edges, villages have structure, paths stay clear.
- Decor respects the terrain it sits on instead of being scattered on top of it.
- Walkable areas stay readable, so the map is playable right after generation.
You spend less time cleaning up the result and more time adding the details that make the map yours.
Choose a Style
v3 introduces styles. Instead of getting whatever look the AI picks, you choose the visual direction of your map before generating it, and the tilesets, terrains and decor follow it.
That makes it easier to keep a consistent look across several maps of the same game.
Water, Generated
Earlier this year, the map editor gained terrain morphology. The generator now uses it to create water.
Describe a lake in a forest clearing, a pond near a village, or a river crossing a field, and the AI shapes the ground and fills it with water. The map is no longer a flat surface covered with decoration, and the water areas stay editable with the same morphology tools you use by hand.
Out of Alpha
With this version, AI map generation leaves alpha. The results are consistent enough to be a reliable starting point for your projects, whether you generate from an existing tileset and terrain or start completely from scratch.
Nothing changes in how you work with the result: every tile, element and water area can be moved, adjusted or removed. Generated tilesets and terrains stay in your project and can be reused for your next maps.
Try It
Open RPGJS Studio, pick a style, write a prompt describing the place you imagine, and refine the result in the map editor. Then press play and walk through it in your browser.
