RPGJS Studio 1.13: Draw a Reference for Your AI Map, Plus Faster Loading and Fixes

RPGJS Studio 1.13 is out. The main news is in the AI map generator: you can now draw a rough sketch of the map you have in mind, and the generator paints the real map from it. This version also lets you duplicate a map, makes games load faster, and fixes a round of bugs.

Draw the Layout, Let the AI Paint It

Describing a map in words is sometimes not enough. Where does the road go? Which side is the water on? Is the inn in the middle of the village or at its edge? A few strokes answer these questions faster than a paragraph.

In Generate a map, a new pencil button opens a small drawing pad. It is deliberately simple:

  • a pen and an eraser,
  • eight colors and an adjustable thickness,
  • undo, redo and clear all,
  • a sheet that has the ratio of your map, so what you draw is the layout you get.

Draw the roads, the water, the buildings and the zones where you want them, then press Use this drawing. Write a few words about the style or the atmosphere (or leave the description empty, a default sentence is proposed), and generate.

The generator treats your sketch as a layout guide: it places the roads, the water and the buildings where you drew them, with the same arrangement and proportions. It does not copy your strokes, your colors or your drawing style. You get a real map, painted in the visual style you picked, not a colored-in version of your doodle.

You can reopen the drawing with Edit the drawing to adjust it and generate again.

A File Is Now a Reference, Too

The file button used to turn the picture you chose directly into the map. It now works like the drawing: your image is a reference that inspires the generation. The generator takes its composition, its subjects and its mood, and redraws it as a top-down map in the requested style, without copying it literally.

That makes any picture useful: a screenshot of a place you like, an illustration, a photo, a sketch made elsewhere.

A few details:

  • a generation takes one reference: a file or a drawing, and a new one replaces the previous one,
  • the cost does not change,
  • the map is still generated in the style you choose, from your description and your reference.

Duplicate a Map

A new Duplicate map button appears on each map of the list. It creates a copy of the map inside the same project, with its own events and blocks, so you can try a variation, build a second version of a location, or reuse a layout without touching the original.

The copy uses the same media as the original (images, sounds), and editing the events of the copy never changes the original map.

Faster Loading

This release keeps working on performance, this time on the game side:

  • the game now asks for several media in a single request instead of one request per file,
  • the animations of several characters are answered in one request,
  • players are only sent what they actually read, which lightens what travels over the network.

The result is fewer round trips when a game loads, especially on maps with many characters and images.

Bug Fixes

  • Character animations: the row order of the animations of characters generated with AI is now stored, and exported the way the game reads it.
  • Conditions on direction: a conditional branch can now read the player’s direction correctly.
  • Maps in a game project: a game map loads with its own project again.
  • Media with an API key: listing the media with an API key reads the right project.

The engine under your game is also updated to the latest stable releases of RPG-JS and CanvasEngine.

Try It

Update your project, open Generate a map, press the pencil and sketch the island, the village or the dungeon you have in mind.
